The time has almost arrived, our Falmouth shop window has been taken over by 40 paper boats hand made from copies of the Seasalt Times, and voices around the design studios are warming up for a weekend of shanty singing.

The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival kicks off tomorrow and we couldn’t be any more excited about it. The Shanty Festival celebrates the heritage of the humble shanty song, traditional work songs that were sung to motivate the crew of trading vessels and Clipper ships, many of which would have docked here in Falmouth. The songs helped with morale, and the rhythm helped the sailors haul the ropes in time. It’s rumoured that when sailors voiced their complaints about officers in the guise of a shanty, they would go unpunished!

Bands from all around Europe will be taking to stages throughout the town, you’ll even find performers outside our shop.

A full list of all performers can be found in the Shanty Festival programme.

Watch a round up of the shanty festival, sing along with the Fisherman’s Friends and get in the shanty spirit.

Will you be at this years festival? Share your photos and videos with us on Faceboook, Twitter and Instagram, we’d love to see you enjoying the shanties.
