We’re on a mission for our fishermen!

You’ve seen our limited edition T-shirts and Christmas cards in store, as well as the pictures from our charity bake offs at the Seasalt design studios and our Midnight Madness walk across Dartmoor, but have you ever wondered why we work so closely with The Fishermen’s Mission to raise money for the charity?

Here in Cornwall we’re very proud to have such an amazing variety of fresh fish landed off our coast every day. It’s because of this that we’re so grateful for the hard work that the Mission puts in to caring for our fishing community.

The sea drives a lot of what we do here in Seasalt, influencing our seasonal colour palette, new patterns and designs. Our latest print, Cods & Pans, was influenced by Denys Val Baker’s book, The Sea’s in the Kitchen, a story that ends with sea bursting in through the author’s kitchen door! While the sea can be a calming and inspirational source, we are reminded that it can also be destructive.

With the glorious sunshine we’ve had here in the South West over the last few weeks, it’s easy to forget the ferocious weather that we experienced earlier in the year. Our fantastic Cornish fishermen were hit particularly hard, with many unable to get out to sea for several weeks and others losing vital fishing equipment and even their fishing boats.

Luckily in the midst of the devastation, there was a light at the end of the tunnel; The Fishermen’s Mission! The UK-wide charity provided emergency support for many fishermen and their families throughout the storms.

Their hard work continues as they have just opened their very first retail outlet in Meneage Street, Helston at the top of the Lizard Peninsula, home to many fishing villages. So if you’re heading to Cornwall this summer don’t forget to pop in and say ‘hello’.
