Ahoy there!

Yesterday afternoon, we made our way down to Falmouth’s Prince of Wales Pier to welcome the world’s only transatlantic engineless cargo vessel, Tres Hombres. The ship travelled all the way from the sandy shores of the Caribbean to us here in Falmouth to bring a bounty of 18-year old rum, matured in oak barrels, and organic, fair trade cocoa (two of our favourite things!).

The tall ship’s arrival was hosted by New Dawn Traders, a lovely independent fair trading company based here in the south west, and marks the start of four days of festivities centred around Falmouth’s shores.

As the tug boat made its way out to meet the magnificent vessel, the tides came rolling in and the winds became too strong to bring the huge boat in safely, so it was decided that a smaller local boat would make its way out to unload Tres Hombres’ cargo and crew and bring it safely to shore.

Whilst we didn’t get a glimpse of the boat on Friday afternoon we were entertained by The Story Republic, a travelling world of words that celebrates the place of story in Cornwall’s culture. There were poems from famous Cornish poet Charles Causley, singing and even a suitcase parade!

Once the rum and cocoa arrived safely ashore, it was loaded onto a horse and cart and paraded through the town.  The rum will now be blended with Cornish spring water and bottled at The Rebel Brewing Company, just up the road from our Design Studios and the cocoa beans will be making their way to Chocolarder of Cornwall, a master chocolatier, who will roast, mature and hand-temper the beans into delicious New Dawn Chocolate.
