Behind the scenes with our Print Designers

Discover the inspiration behind two of our favourite summer prints.

Working from our studios that overlook the sparkling wates of Falmouth Bay, our talented team of print designers translate the sights and seasons of our coastal home into the detailed patterns and vibrant colours that dance through our collections.

Drawing inspiration from coastal walks, the work of Cornish artists and the ever-changing landscape of Cornwall, the team use methods ranging from graphite sketches to watercolour, inks, etching and block printing to bring each print to life.

This season, they look to the work of artist Rose Hilton, and the way she captured the romance of life along the Cornish coast in pared-back brushstrokes and a careful balance of light, colour and shape.

We sit down with Seasalt co-founder and print designer, Sophie, and print designer Kathryn, to learn more about the process behind creating two of our favourite summer prints.

Artist’s Anemone

“I wanted to try to create a colourful floral design, in the style of Rose Hilton’s paintings. She was so clever with colour, and often would build layers of tiny daubs of colour on top of one another, in the pointillist style. I chose anemone flowers as they are one of my favourites and grow really well in west Cornwall, where Rose lived.” – Sophie Chadwick

This vibrant print blossoms across wearable pieces in organic cotton, including the timeless fit and flare silhouette of our Belle Midi Dress and the soft, airy crinkles of our Mrs Treloar Short Sleeve Shirt. We honour Rose’s fluid painterly style with lightweight fabrics that conjure her characteristic femininity – made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, both of these summer-ready pieces are perfect for adding a pop of colour to your wardrobe.

Abstract Dancing Forms print - line drawings on a loose, summery shirt

Dancing Forms

“Inspired by the female forms in Rose Hilton’s work, the abstract lines of this design paint delicate sketches of female forms with brush strokes and sensitive colour. Dancing Forms and Artist’s Anemone would have been done in different ways – but both using painted marks and then the colours get tweaked once the designs are worked up in the computer. It can really depend on the

style the designer is going for, and the kind of print they are hoping to create. So even if two prints are painted, they can come out quite differently.” – Kathryn Harvey

Alongside our vibrant floral print, you’ll find this large-scale linear design alive with an energy and joyful movement. Flowing across the easy silhouette of our longline Olive Villa Shirt, it’s the ideal companion for long summer days. Complement the inky blue lines and dipped back hem with classic denim for an effortless look, or throw on over swimwear as a holiday cover-up when shade is in short supply.
