Alyson Walsh’s summer style edit

The former magazine fashion editor and Daily Telegraph columnist styles her favourite classic pieces for summer.

‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing’; fell-walking expert Alfred Wainwright’s quote is often cited but hard to beat. This kind of stoic attitude is what’s needed for a holiday on home turf. And it encapsulates how we’ll be dressing in the summer of 2021 perfectly.  Going on vacation in the UK, we’ll no doubt have to prepare for all eventualities – but still want to look stylish.

Fortunately, Seasalt’s lovely range of daywear takes care of every possible outcome: sudden downpour across Polperro Harbour? Not a problem. Heatwave in Hastings? Piece of cake. Eye-watering breeze on Bamburgh Beach? They’ve got your back.

Here are five versatile pieces to help you sail through summer, come rain or shine…

The Dry Point Coat

Being born and bred in Blackpool, a thorough appreciation of the benefits of a waterproof raincoat runs through me like letters through a stick of rock. Whatever the season, this lightweight parka-style rolls up neatly into a tote bag and – should the heavens open – it can be layered over a jacket or jumper. Take my advice and put a neat waterproof coat at the top of your holiday wardrobe wish list this summer…

The Sailor Top

Nothing says ‘summer at the seaside like a Sailor Top (even if you are spending most of the time in South London). An absolute master of multi-tasking, this chic base layer looks the business beneath jumpsuits, pinafores and dungarees. And I love to see a sliver of stripe popping out from underneath a sweater. Whether you’re layering up or not, the Breton top is as chic now as when Coco Chanel pulled one on in the 1920s.

The Makers Jumper

I’m a bit of a fusspot when it comes to necklines and can’t bear anything too neat-fitting. Not a problem with the Maker’s Jumper, which has an elegant, easy shape. This versatile knit is made from organic cotton and comes in an array of lovely colours. Perfect for breezy days and pub garden evenings.

Hallworthy Jeans

Praise be. The dark denim, Hallworthy Jeans have a tapered fit, turn-ups and that crucial Lycra content. In my younger days I could handle rugged, unwashed denim but now it’s all about comfort, ease and a little stretch. Whether in the city or at the seaside, dark denim has excellent go-anywhere potential. Good quality basics are the building blocks of so many outfits: jeans, cotton t-shirts, cool jackets and handy canvas bags.

The Sailor Dress

If (like me) you’re fond of a stripy Breton top, then you’ll love the versatile Sailor Dress. The just-below-the-knee length, good quality cotton jersey and the all-important side pockets make it an everyday summer essential. Pull-on and go to the beach, the shops or the spare room (if you’re working from home).
