Warp & Weft | Autumn Winter ‘23

The story behind our autumn collection.

As the weather turns wilder, we seek simpler rhythms inspired by slow craft. Misty autumn mornings give their light to ripples of cord and workwear jackets, essential for layering on long afternoons in the crafter’s studio.

Throughout the collection, we were drawn to the structural shapes and glazed colour of mid-century Cornish pottery. Our grounded colour palette mirrors glazy tones of green, blue and teal which contrast earthy shades and clay-like neutrals.

“As a design team, we were mesmerised by the skill involved in hand crafting techniques,” says senior Seasalt womenswear designer, Cathryn May. “We loved interpreting the details found within these crafts into details on our garments.”

Ceramic forms inspire angular, abstract prints that blend curved lines and straight edges, and smudged edges give florals a glazed feel.

When daylight fades into candlelight, the idea of sharing stories and food with friends gives a warmth to cosy, characterful knitwear. Soft yet interesting textures take inspiration from the work of Cornish weavers. Their use of natural dyes inspires a palette of richly warming tones foraged from autumnal woodlands.

Fair Isle knits with geometric patterns follow weave-like patterns, and large flowerheads have been sketched with fine lines as if crafted on a loom. “Our collections are a true collaboration,” says Cathryn, “matching the garment shapes with the perfect prints, ensuring each piece is well proportioned for a good fit.”

It all comes to life on a canvas of quality fabrics. From breathable organic cotton to responsibly sourced wool, the design team have dedicated themselves to sourcing the perfect material for each piece. Making sure it has the right drape, weight and texture and carefully planning the collection so it can be layered and built upon as the summer mellows into autumn and winter.

Our menswear collection is rooted in Cornish workwear, with purposeful fabrics and details that have been refined over generations of use.

“The range is inspired by some of Cornwall’s lost industries, celebrating craftsmanship and also referencing the natural forms found in the Cornish landscapes.” Zoe Wells, our menswear designer, explains how stone and granite textures can be seen translated into hardwearing cloth with herringbone patterns.

As the seasons shift, practical layers have been designed to become part of the fabric of every day. Shirts and knitted jumpers have a homespun feel, with yarn-dyed checks and breathable natural blends.

“As a counterbalance to our rich and grounding colour palette, we’ve included some colourful Fair Isles and knit patterns, inspired by a black and white photo of some brick makers in Fair Isle vests.” Zoe tells us that this season’s smocks and jackets have also been inspired by the hardy clothes of Cornish craftsmen, with waterproof coats made to brave the wildest weather.

Inspired by a heritage of careful craft and well-loved hand me downs, our latest collection has been crafted to become part of your story, adding layers to your tale for many seasons to come. Show us how you’re styling the new collection with the hashtag #WearingSeasalt on Instagram or Facebook
